Ladd, Thomas
Story of old gravestone dug up in Main Street cemetery, Biddeford, near White’s Wharf. Stone bore inscription “Thomas Ladd, 1790”. See BWJ 09/13/1907, p.1 c.5-6 (near bottom).

Lafayette, Marquis de
Recollections of grandson of Deacon Amos Chase, who at 9 with his father & uncle saw Lafayette. Also tells stories he’d heard of Deacon Amos Chase who at 99 greeted Lafayette during his 1825 visit. BWJ 10/27/1899, p.6 c.1-2.

Landry, George A.
Born 1874 in Biddeford. Worked as a bookkeeper before opening a grocery on Alfred Street. Brother to Wilfrid Landry. See Lawton’s Franco-Americans of Maine, p.97 [PICTURE].

Landry, Wilfrid
(1888-1960) Owned Landry pharmacy in Biddeford. Brother to George A. Landry. Cartoon sketch while mayor, appeared in 1938. Wife Pauline died 11/08/1940. His obit appeared in BDJ, 05/19/1960. See also Lawton’s Franco-Americans of Maine, p.173.

Lane, Eustace
(1835-1913) Father of Gertrude Lane, later editor of Woman’s Home Companion. Piano and organ dealer in Saco, died at age 78. Obit BWJ 10/24/1913, p.8 c.5.

Lane, T. K.

Lassell, Israel (Captain)
Married Abigail Hill of Biddeford, about 1788-9. She died 10/30/1800. He married the widow Susannah Walker 02/24/1801. Daughter Olive (b.1789) married John Patten about 1807-8. Capt. Lassell was captured by either the French or British in the West Indies 07/12/1813. Died in May 1831. Lassell, Issabella (Isabella)
Daughter of John & Mary Lassell. Died 10/10/1837, aged 19 years. Buried in Woodlawn Cemetery along side Moses Bradbury lot (slate headstone).

Lausier, Amelie
(1845-1936) Mother of Louis B. Lausier and widow of Antoine Lausier. Born in St. Aime, Canada, daughter of Francois & Amelie Theroux Cartier. Had 9 children, 3 surviving: Louis B., Joseph F. (Marblehead, MA), and Emma L. Pugsley. BDJ 10/01/1936, p.2 c.3.

Lausier, Louis B.
(1879-1962) Born in Biddeford and educated in public schools. Studied at Saint Anne College in Canada, then read law with Judge Haley of Biddeford for 4 years. Admitted to the bar in 1906. Long-time mayor of Biddeford, often known as “Papa” Lausier. Mayor through World War II. Powerful and controversial political regime. Died 01/14/1962; obit in BDJ 01/15/1962, p.1. Leavitt, Edward H.
(1824-1907) Home at 40 Sullivan Street. Overseerof carding department of Laconia & Pepperell Mills for 35 years, from 1846 to 1881 when he retired. Obit BWJ 10/11/1907, p.8 c.5.

LeBlanc, Mrs. Francois
(1823-1908) Second oldest French resident dies at age of 85. Was next to come after Joseph Shevenell. Came to Biddeford in 1854. BWJ 12/25/1908, p.6 c.4.

Ledoux, Carmeline (Painchaud)
(1876-1923) One of the musically/theatrically talented Painchaud sisters, daughters of Pierre Painchaud. First wife to Urbain Ledoux. Husband was US Consul to Canada at Three Rivers, QC where both her daughters (Lucille and Yvette) were born. Later they moved overseas where he served as consul in Prague. Son Norman was born in Boston. Divorced from husband by 1920, when he was doing his New York work, she lived in Boston raising their children and worked as a proofreader for a newspaper. Article “Mr. Zero” of Maine: The Story of Urbain Ledoux by Michael Guignard (Le FORUM Vol. 38 #4, p.5-9). Buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, Biddeford.

1860: Lincoln 818, Douglas 605, scattering 53. Six out of 7 wards gave Lincoln clear majority and teh 7th ward was a tie.
1864: Lincoln carried wards 1, 3, 5; McClellan 2, 4, 6, 7. Total vote Lincoln 675, McClellan 703. High school boys vote: Lincoln 23, McClellan 8.
