Salvas, Joseph Jovite (“J.J.”)
(1895-1970) J.J. Salvas was a major producer, director and actor in french-language plays in and around Biddeford for 40 years. Began working with the actor Walter Perkins, and struck off on own in 1908. He produced his last play in 1947. See exhibit at Biddeford History + Heritage Project. SANDLER BROS. (Business)
(1929-ca. 2013). Originally located at 81 Alfred Street, Biddeford. Produce wholesale business founded in Biddeford in 1929 by brothers Irving and Herman Sandler. The Sandler brothers ran the business along with sister Tobina Sandler. Herman Sandler died in 1942; his son Herb Sandler joined the business (Herb later married Marion Osher and went off into other successful businesses). Sandler, Marion Osher
(1930-2012) Born and raised in Biddeford to parents Samuel and Leah Osher, Marion O. Sandler followed the family legacy of excelling in both business and philanthropy. She was a ground-breaking female finance executive; first as a high-ranking Wall Street analyst in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and then again as one of the first women to become a chief executive of a Fortune 500 company–Golden West (World Savings Bank). With her husband, Herb Sandler, she started both Golden West and later the Sandler Foundation, a philanthropy notable for founding ProPublica and supporting numerous other nonprofit organizations. (d. 1931) Photographer, proprietor of “Sawtelle’s Studio” in Union Block. City directories show him as photographer at 98 Main Street, Biddeford from 1882 through 1896. In 1909 established summer studio in York, then went to Southern Pines, North Carolina. Wife died there. See BWJ 03/25/1921, p.8 c.1 or BDJ 03/22/1921, p.8 c.4. Obit in BDJ 06/03, 1931, p.2.

(1831-1893) Father was banker Geo. Scamman. Went to California in 1850 during Gold Rush at age of 19. Became wealthy and returned to Saco in 1881 where he married Francisca, daughter of Dr. John Allen of Saco. Thereafter lived in Saco making annual trips to California to look after business interest. (1831-1909) Mayor of Biddeford at end of Civil War, 1865-66. Born in Sanford, son of Samuel Madison Shaw (whose brother was Timothy Shaw Sr.). Both Charles A. & Timothy Jr. were grandsons of General Timothy Shaw, of Shaw’s Ridge, Sanford (See sketch in Emery’s History of Sanford, p.500-505.) Married in Salem, Mass. 02/11/1856 to Sophie Priest “both of Biddeford”, U & J 02/22/1856, p.3 c.5. Owned 5 newspapers in Maine. Friend of Artemus Ward and P.T. Barnum. Shaw, Timothy Jr.
(1817-1892) Born in Sanford, came to Biddeford in October 1865 as treasurer of Shaw & Clark (until 1867). City Treasurer 1868-1872. His father, Gen. Timothy Shaw (1783-1870) was Charles A. Simpson, Eben
(1828-1901) Harness maker, set up business in Biddeford in 1848. Chief engineer of Fire Department 1859-1871. Was prime mover in purchase of first steam fire engines. Harness shop in Washington Street was center of crowd of jokers: for stories see BWJ 11/25/1921 p.7 c.2-5. Grandfather (Benjamin) was a member of the Boston Tea Party.
